This Old Dog is rooted more in a synth-base than any of his previous releases, but he is careful not to let that tactic overshadow the other instruments and overall вЂњunpluggedвЂќ mood of the work. So this is a new endeavor for me.вЂќДЄnd right off the bat, from the pops and clicks of the CR-78 and acoustic strums on the album-opening вЂњMy Old Man,вЂќ the synth-drenched beauty of the second track, вЂњThis Old Dog,вЂќ and that ironic recurring word itself, itвЂ™s clear that DeMarcoвЂ™s bag is filled with new tricks indeed.

The majority of this album is acoustic guitar, synthesizer, some drum machine, and one song is electric guitar. I usually demo on a drum machine and then record real drums, but I liked that machine so much I kept it on the album. вЂњItвЂ™s on the album a lot, maybe four or five songs.

вЂњThat thing helped a ton, especially for demoing,вЂќ he says. He also attributes some of the delay to his exploration of new gear heвЂ™d purchased, specifically a CR-78 drum machine, which he used while writing and can be heard on his album tracks for the first time ever. It was a different vibe.вЂќДeMarco wrote some demos for This Old Dog on an acoustic guitar, an unusual yet eye-opening method for him. When that happens, you really get to know the songs. But this time, I wrote them and they sat. And it was weird, because usually I just write, record, and put it out no problem. But then I realized that moving to a new city and starting a new life takes time.

Arriving in California with a grip of demos heвЂ™d written in New York, he realized after a few months of setting up his new shop-complete with a few new toys-that the gap was giving him perspective (insert tooth joke here).

You could peg him as a hopeless romantic by listening to nearly any one of his albums, but вЂњOne More Love SongвЂќ and вЂњFor the First TimeвЂќ really hit me right in the heartstrings. However, вЂњThis Old DogвЂќ reveals MacвЂ™s more sensitive side.

His older releases, like вЂњRock and Roll Night Club,вЂќ вЂњMac Demarco 2,вЂќ and вЂњSalad Days,вЂќ all seem to have the same distinctive sense of ridiculousness that you just canвЂ™t help laughing at. The biggest difference between вЂњThis Old DogвЂќ and MacвЂ™s previous albums is the amount of humor he interjects. Even вЂњOn the Level,вЂќ which is almost entirely comprised of synth music, feels organic and mellow. вЂњThis Old DogвЂќ is no exception songs like вЂњDreams From YesterdayвЂќ and вЂњSisterвЂќ are a perfect balance between soft acoustics and synth. ItвЂ™s a fine line to walk, but he toes it excellently without sounding over-processed or unnatural. What makes Mac so incredible to me is his ability to combine synth tones and acoustic guitar. ItвЂ™s both calming and upbeat at the same time, staying true to MacвЂ™s classic, easygoing spirit. Looking to turn your mood around? There exist few better albums to do the trick. Out of his entire discography, вЂњThis Old DogвЂќ stands out as epitomizing MacвЂ™s personality the most lovable, gentle, and goofy. вЂњThis Old DogвЂќ has to be my all-time favorite Mac DeMarco album (although вЂњHere Comes the CowboyвЂќ comes in a close second).
